Used toy lots: check which pieces belong to each set

Identify the version, find a matching reference and compare component types as well as quantities. The right total can still hide a duplicate and a missing piece.

A box full of pieces can look like a complete set. Knowing what it includes takes more than a count: you need to identify the toy or game and compare its components with a matching reference. When considering used toy lots, clarify what has been checked and what remains unknown.

Clarify what “complete” means in the offer

A description of a mixed lot and a description of an individual set answer different questions. “Assorted toys” names a category; it does not confirm the pieces in every game. Pieces arriving in the same box are not, by that fact alone, known to belong together.

When an offer mentions complete sets, ask which sets the statement covers and how they were checked. If the information applies only to certain items, keep that distinction. Checking one game does not establish the contents of every toy in the lot.

Find a reference that matches the product

Record the name and product or set number when available. Check that the instructions or list you find match that version. Similar packaging or a name from the same collection is not enough to establish a match.

Start with the manufacturer’s official resources when possible. Hasbro’s Consumer Care page directs readers to its instructions website. LEGO’s instructions finder asks for a set name or number and explains that the number appears on the box and product page.

The reference describes the product, not the contents of the lot you are considering. If you cannot identify the version or find a suitable list, leave the comparison unresolved. Do not choose the closest-looking list just to mark the set complete.

Compare component types, not just the total

Make a short note for each set, separating what the reference lists from what the check actually confirmed. Keep names or numbers that distinguish components: twelve different cards are not necessarily the same as twelve cards in total.

These three lines help another person understand the result without having to interpret a sum:

  • Reference: product name or number, document consulted and the components it lists.
  • Checked: identified pieces and confirmed quantities, including duplicates or differences.
  • Unresolved: unchecked components, uncertain identities or information still needed for the comparison.

An example: twelve cards, with one duplicate

Imagine a fictional game whose list specifies one board, four tokens and twelve different cards numbered 1 through 12. Checking that set, you find the board, all four tokens and twelve cards. But there are two cards numbered 7 and none numbered 12.

The card count matches; the identities do not. A useful note would read: “Board and four tokens present. Twelve cards in total: card 12 is missing and card 7 is duplicated.” Writing only “twelve cards included” would omit the detail that changes the comparison.

If the cards have not been checked yet, write “cards not verified.” That does not establish that any are missing. This example is not a real product or ABC merchandise; it shows the difference between a confirmed missing piece and an unfinished check.

Bring a specific question to your wholesale inquiry

You could ask: “What types of toys are in the mix we are discussing? For sets with several pieces, what component information do you have? Which have been compared with a list, and which remain unchecked?” Request the available information without assuming there is a detailed inventory for each toy.

If a complete set is essential to your selection and the information is insufficient, keep that uncertainty in your decision. Do not count on obtaining a missing piece later without confirming that possibility. A component list alone does not describe condition or establish that the toy works.

At America’s Best Clothing, the secondhand toy mix changes with the lot and availability. Our catalog recommends asking about the types, conditions and pieces in current merchandise.
