Wholesale used shoes: what to check before buying

Look at matching pairs, marked sizes and the condition of both shoes before choosing a lot. Use a simple inspection record to keep your findings together.

A sneaker looks like a good fit for your shop. Then you check the other shoe and find a different size. That small detail matters more than a good product photo. When buying wholesale used shoes, start with what you can offer as a complete pair: two shoes that belong together, an identifiable size, and a condition you can describe clearly.

Start with the pair, not the pile

Put the left and right shoe together before counting a pair. Compare the model, color and size labels. Two similar-looking shoes are not enough if they are different models or sizes. If a label is worn away or information is missing, record the question instead of guessing.

Also clarify what the stated quantity means: complete pairs, individual shoes or total weight. A bag described by weight may not state how many pairs it contains. Ask for that information separately and whether it comes from a count or an estimate.

Keep the size as it is marked

Record the number with its system and category, such as US men, US women, UK or EU, when the label identifies them. A number alone loses context. Nike’s chart, for example, separates these categories and notes that the CM size on its labels differs from foot length.

To organize the assortment, make rows for each category and marked size. Avoid converting everything from memory into one system. If you need an equivalent size, consult the relevant manufacturer’s guide and keep the original marking in your record too.

Then compare that list with your own sales or customer inquiries. If shoppers ask for particular sizes, a varied assortment may still leave that need unmet. When a supplier has no breakdown, record that the distribution is unknown rather than estimating it from the few shoes visible in a photo.

Describe the condition of both shoes

Check each shoe separately. Record what you can see on the sole, exterior, interior and fastenings or laces. A note such as “visible wear on the right heel” is more useful than simply marking the pair “good.”

If an offer uses terms such as first quality, premium or Grade A, ask for the actual criteria. Find out what wear is allowed, what is excluded, and how a pair with missing components is treated. A grade label alone does not answer those questions.

Separate what you can describe from what needs further checking. A photo by itself does not establish fit, brand authenticity or remaining useful life. Avoid promising those qualities to your customers without supporting evidence.

Keep a record you can return to

A notebook or spreadsheet works. Give each reviewed pair an identifier and use it for the photos too. This suggested record is a tool for your business; it does not describe America’s Best Clothing’s sorting process.

  • Lot reference, review date and identifier for the pair.
  • Footwear type and whether the left and right shoe match.
  • Size and system on each label; mark unreadable information as unresolved.
  • Separate condition notes for the left and right shoe.
  • Photos of the pair, labels, soles and any detail needing clarification.
  • Fits my assortment, falls outside my selection, or needs further review.

Turn your findings into specific questions

If you only saw a sample, note how many pairs you reviewed and which bag they came from. That review can guide your questions, but it does not establish the mix of the entire lot. Confirm what is known about the remaining merchandise before committing.

Ask about differences between the description and what you observed. Keep the replies with your quote and confirm purchase and pickup terms. A short record helps you explain your needs without relying on your memory of each conversation.
