Used clothing measurements: explain how each was taken
A number needs context. Separate a flat garment’s width from a body measurement and identify the tape’s endpoints, the garment’s position and the units.

“Chest: 52” can leave more questions than it answers. Are those centimeters or inches? Was a flat garment measured, or a person? Where was the tape placed? When listing used clothing, give the number enough context for a buyer to understand and compare it.
Start by naming what you measured
If you placed a shirt on a table and measured from one side to the other, you are describing a garment dimension. That number alone is not the body circumference of someone who can wear it. Keep the size on the label as a separate detail when it is readable.
UNIQLO’s official guide distinguishes body measurements from finished-product measurements. For comparing the latter, it suggests using a similar garment laid flat. That is a useful reference for understanding the kind of measurement, not a universal chart for assigning sizes to used clothes.
Describe the tape’s path
Record how the garment was positioned: laid on a flat surface, buttoned if applicable and not stretched for the measurement you are describing. If that position changes between measurements, say so; the numbers no longer share the same setup.
Identify the start and end points. “Straight across from underarm to underarm” describes a width. For length, specify whether you started at the shoulder beside the neckline, the center back neckline or another point. “Length” alone does not identify that path.
Write the unit beside the value. If the tape has both centimeters and inches, check which scale you are reading before copying it. Do not mix a measurement in centimeters with one in inches without identifying each.
A shirt note, before and after
Imagine a fictional shirt with an initial note reading “M, chest 52, length 68.” Suppose it was measured buttoned, flat and without stretching. A more complete description could read as follows. These values illustrate the wording; they are not ABC merchandise measurements:
- Marked size on label: M.
- Position: shirt buttoned, laid flat and not stretched.
- Width: approximately 52 cm, straight across from the sleeve-and-side-seam junction beneath one underarm to the other.
- Front length: approximately 68 cm, measured straight from the shoulder-seam point beside the neckline to the bottom front edge.
Compare measurements taken the same way
The example’s 52 cm describes a flat width. Do not turn it directly into a body circumference or an equivalent clothing size. The marked M and that width answer different questions.
If a buyer wants to compare with a shirt they own, share your measuring path so they can repeat it on a similar garment. A length taken from the front shoulder cannot be compared directly with one beginning at the center back neckline.
A photo can show both tape endpoints and the scale used. Keep the written explanation too, so the buyer does not have to zoom into the image to understand it. The comparison provides a reference for dimensions; it does not guarantee how the garment will fit a person.
Answer the buyer’s specific question
If someone asks whether the width was measured flat, answer with the position and endpoints. If they need another measurement, take and describe it separately. Do not fill in an unmeasured dimension from a similar shirt or an assumption based on the marked size.
When a garment’s shape makes the requested points unclear, explain that difficulty and clarify which measurement the buyer needs. Before publishing, check that the written number, unit and any photo all describe the same measurement.
